What is Reading Recovery?

Reading Recovery is a short-term early intervention program for first grade students having difficulty learning to read and write. Children receive daily, one to one instruction for 30 minutes from a specially trained teacher who will help them to become independent readers and writers. The program lasts on a average from 12 to 20 weeks during which the student makes accelerated learning progress in order to successfully and independently in the classroom. Students continue to participate in their classroom reading instruction while they are in Reading Recovery.
The Reading Recovery Lesson
Every day the student will have a 30 minute lesson with the Reading Recovery teacher. Each lesson the student will have an opportunity to read several books and write a short story. The lessons follow a framework but are individually designed to meet the needs of the student. The framework of the lesson is:
Re-reading familiar books
Check on yesterday's new book
Letter and Word Work
Writing stories
Cut-up story
Reading a new book
